Antique Hand-Hewn Wooden Dough Trough with Iron Banding, Primitive
A substantial antique hand-hewn dough trough, hollowed from a single log and finished with riveted iron banding at both ends. This is a classic example of early rural craftsmanship, the kind of utilitarian piece that anchored farmhouse kitchens for generations. The trough has a deep, elongated oval basin with gently curved walls that flare outward toward the top, sitting on a rounded base that allows it to rock slightly. The iron end caps are nailed in place with hand-cut square nails, showing heavy oxidation and honest age throughout. The wood interior displays rich patina with natural checking, surface cracks along the grain, white mineral deposits or old flour residue in areas, and tool marks from the original hollowing process. One prominent crack runs along the top rim near one iron end cap. The exterior shows similar aging with vertical checks and worn surfaces consistent with decades of use. Despite the wear, the piece is structurally sound and holds its shape well. Approximate dimensions based on photos: roughly 28 to 32 inches long, 12 to 14 inches wide, and 8 to 10 inches deep. Exact measurements should be confirmed before listing. Highly sought after as a farmhouse centerpiece, fruit or bread display, or decorative vessel.
