National Geographic Society Map Lot 1941 Northwestern US & 1942 North America Fo
A pair of original National Geographic Society folded map supplements from the World War II years. The first is North America, Washington, May 1942, scale 1:12,000,000, drawn in the Society's Cartographic Section under editor Gilbert Grosvenor with James M. Darley as chief cartographer. It shows the continent in the soft blue-gray, tan and salmon palette of the period, with an inset of the Aleutian Islands. The second is A Map of Northwestern United States and Neighboring Canadian Provinces, Washington, June 1941, scale 1:2,500,000. Both are paper, issued folded with the magazine, and both show fold-line wear and light edge tanning consistent with their age. The 1941 Northwestern US map has a torn and creased lower left corner roughly 2 to 3 inches across. The 1942 North America map has no significant tears. Dimensions are approximate and should be measured before framing. These display well and are popular for framing, WWII-era decorating and classroom or den walls.
