Three original National Geographic Society fold out supplement maps, sold together as a lot. 1. Northern Africa, compiled and drawn in the Cartographic Section of the National Geographic Society for The National Geographic Magazine, John Oliver LaGorce editor, Washington, December 1954. Oblique Mercator projection at 1:7,500,000, about 118.4 miles to the inch, with a legend keying railways, roads under construction, oil pipe lines and fields, canals, water holes, ruins, passes, volcanic debris and dry salt lakes. 2. Northern Hemisphere, drawn by the National Geographic Map Department for The National Geographic Magazine, Gilbert Grosvenor editor, Washington, dated in the mid 1940s; the month and year are only partly legible on the sheet and read as February 1946. 3. A June 1941 map of the northwestern United States and neighboring country, copyright 1941 by the National Geographic Society, James M. Darley chief cartographer, culture by Apphia E. Holdstock, physiography by John J. Brehm, printed by A. Hoen and Co. of Baltimore. The legend plots the historic exploration routes in red: Meriwether Lewis and William Clark 1805-06, David Thompson 1807-11, the Overland Astorians 1811-12, the Oregon Trail and John C. Fremont 1842, 43-44. All three are original period printings on standard supplement stock, never framed or mounted. Condition varies and is honest for the age: all are tanned, the Northern Hemisphere sheet has prominent fold creasing with at least one small tear or separation at a fold intersection, the 1941 sheet has edge browning and corner wear, and the Northern Africa sheet is the cleanest with moderate toning and lies flat.
