Antique Octagonal Aqua Glass Ink Bottle, Sheared Lip, 1800s

$24.00
Collectibles

A wonderful example of a 19th-century hand-blown glass ink bottle in the classic octagonal form, displaying a rich aqua-teal color with natural air bubbles and imperfections throughout the glass body - hallmarks of early American glassmaking. The bottle features a short, wide cylindrical neck with a sheared and tooled lip, typical of bottles produced before the widespread adoption of machine manufacturing. The base shows what appears to be a partially legible embossed maker's mark. The pontil scar is clearly visible on the base, confirming hand production. The body is squat and wide-shouldered, tapering slightly toward the base. Estimated size is approximately 2.5 to 3 inches tall and roughly 2.5 inches across the widest flat. Remnants of original dark ink content are visible inside. The glass has a lovely natural patina with some exterior dirt and mineral deposits consistent with age. The lip shows significant roughness and chipping typical of the sheared finish but no catastrophic cracks to the body. A great addition to any antique bottle or Americana collection.
