Antique Pontil-Base Octagonal Ink Bottle, Blue-Green Glass, 1840s-1870s

$24.00
Collectibles

A charming antique open-pontil ink bottle in a rich blue-green aqua glass, featuring a classic multi-sided (approximately 12-panel) octagonal body with a short, square-collared neck. The rough, open pontil scar is clearly visible on the base, placing manufacture most likely between the 1840s and 1870s, before machine-made bottles became standard. The glass displays abundant seed bubbles and surface irregularities throughout, hallmarks of early free-blown or dip-mold production. Heavy mineral deposits and iron oxide staining are present on the base and panels, consistent with burial or prolonged soil contact, suggesting this may be a dug bottle. The neck lip shows chipping and roughness, which is typical of period hand-finishing but should be noted as damage. No embossing or maker marks are legible in the photos. Estimated height is approximately 2 to 2.5 inches based on hand scale. This is a great addition to any antique bottle or americana collection, and displays beautifully as folk art or shelf decor.
