Antique Russell Jennings Spur Auger Bit Set in Original Wood Box c.1878

$250.00
Tools

Rare and desirable antique set of Russell Jennings Spur Auger Bits in their original dovetailed wooden storage box. The inside lid retains the original black and gold paper label clearly reading 'SPUR AUGER BITTS, Warranted Best Steel, THE RUSSELL JENNINGS MFG. CO., Deep River, Conn., U.S.A.' with a date visible as 1878. The label also references a patent date of May 20th and mentions the bits are sent exclusively in these boxes. The box features ornate cast metal hinges and a decorative metal hasp/clasp on the front. Inside, the box has individual wooden channels/slots to hold each bit securely. The set contains what appears to be 6-7 auger bits of varying sizes - two appear to be in excellent clean condition with bright steel showing Jennings-pattern double-twist design, two to three others show significant surface rust and oxidation. Bits range from approximately small to large diameter. The wooden box shows age-appropriate wear, darkening, and minor cracking but remains structurally intact with tight joinery. This is a highly collectible 19th-century American woodworking tool set from one of the most respected manufacturers of the era. Pickup only.
